Cate Barnett (Howe 93-95) ran the London Marathon for the MS Society and completed the 26 mile course in a time of 5 hours 25 minutes.
Cate tried unsuccessfully, as so many others do, to get a place in the national ballot. Having promised for years to 'run the marathon for step-dad' Mike Moxey (also ex-Howe) she approached the MS Society. She found she was up against stiff competition for a place running for charity too. Eventually she signed up to a contractual promise to collect £2000 for the society in exchange for a place. (It's not too late to donate http://www.justgiving.com/Cate-Barnett.)
Training hard for months beforehand with few problems, only ten days ahead of the day she managed to sprain an ankle. Fortunately she overcame the pain and stepped out regardless. Family and friends cheered her on but she found the slow early pace actually sapped her energy and she finished an hour slower than her goal time. The worst parts - winding through Canary Wharf and the energy gels!
Will she do it again? Her immediate reaction on the day was 'NO WAY' but we have it on good authority she has entered the public ballot for a place again next year... watch this space.
