I was chosen to participate in One & Other, Anthony Gormley’s art project on 9 August 2009, where I spent my hour promoting the Youth Fight for Jobs (YFJ) campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the problems young people are facing in the employment market – something I’m really passionate about.
The whole experience was over so fast! It was really exhilarating, I was really nervous when I first got up there as public speaking has always been a fear of mine, but it’s one that I’m gradually overcoming, and once I got into my stride I started to really enjoy myself. Knowing that you have support on the ground makes all the difference – there’s no way I could have done this without knowing they were there.
I’ve had lovely messages of support from those watching both on the ground, and via the webcam on the One & Other website. People have been telling me they’re really proud of me, and that I was funny in a good way that I got my points across well, which makes me happy in the knowledge that it was a good job well done. It feels strange to have everyone else giving me this kudos, considering that I’m just grateful to have had this chance at all, and thankful to all those who’ve helped me make it possible.
