St Vincent ’33 – ‘36 Written by his grandson, Kit Dobner
Donald passed away, peacefully on 15th April 2009.
He joined RHS Greenwich in 1932 and moved with the School to Holbrook before leaving to join the Navy in 1936.
During his years in the Navy he spent a lot of time away on a number of ships including HMS Vincent, Collingwood and The Opossam. His naval career took him around the world including Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Aden and Malta before retiring in 1970.
He married Mary while she was serving in the Wrens and they had three children. In recent years he really enjoyed keeping up-to-date with his seven grandchildren and his two great grandchildren.
Donald was always proud that his three grandsons (Rory, Ross and Kit Dobner) attended RHS and always watched the rugby with pride and enjoyed sports days too. He stood tall as he watched them on parade just as he had done all those many years ago.
Donald was a true and honourable gentleman and a gentle, caring and thoughtful father to his daughters. He will be greatly missed.
