Nevasa

The third Nevasa was BI's largest ship and was launched at Barclay Curle's yard on the Clyde in November 1955. She set out on her maiden voyage from Southampton in July 1956 and set a new standard for trooping, but sadly her life as a troopship was short. The end of national service and the fact that troops were being increasingly transported around the world by air meant that Nevasa was made redundant after only six years. In 1962 the government contract was terminated and the ship was laid up on the River Fal in Cornwall. After along lay-up, BI finally decided to convert Nevasa to an educational cruise ship. The work was carried out at the Silley Cox yard in Falmouth and Nevasa finally set out on her first educational cruise in 1965 working alongside the already successful Dunera and Devonia.  Students from the Royal Hospital School sailed on board Nevasa in the 60s and 70s.

This book describes in detail the two lives of Nevasa and much of the information is anecdotal, supplied by people who worked on the ship or were passengers. Many of the ship's company had kept detailed diaries, providing invaluable information. The SS Uganda Trust has produced a unique study of a ship and way of life that is no more. It will also appeal to those interested in shipbuilding and the history of trooping.
